Translation quality

A good translation accurately reflects the content, register and style of the original text taking into account the field, audience and purpose of the translation.

For example, style should not be modified when translating an audiotape transcript to be used as evidence in court, whereas in a scientific article for publication, spelling mistakes can be corrected and sloppy writing improved.

Similarly, translating ad copy often involves adaptation in order to reach the target audience effectively.

Interpreting quality

Competent interpreting reflects the content, register and style of the original utterances taking into account the context and purpose of the discourse.

This means that interpreting a witness' testimony in court requires the utmost accuracy of both, content and manner, so that witness credibility can be assessed properly by the jury.

In conference interpreting, on the other hand, it is generally desirable to improve on the form of the original whenever possible.

Court interpreting is arguably more demanding than conference interpreting, because the variety of registers and styles (which must be maintained) is wider and the stakes are higher.
